Practical work (experiment) is a prominent feature of school chemistry curriculum.In this talk, at first, I will review the origin, changing tendency, and assumed goals of practical work in the history of school science curriculum in the light of the international literatures on science education.And then, the changes of practical work in school chemistry curriculum during the past three decades in China will be examined in the view of scientific inquiry.Furthermore, the new characteristics of practical work in the latest version of the national chemistry curricula at both the junior and senior school levels will be introduced.In the last part, I will discuss the following issues concerning practical work in school chemistry curriculum with the audiences: (1) the social factors that affect the form and content of practical work; (2) the nature of practical work in terms of scientific inquiry in school chemistry curriculum; and (3) the factors that constrain the implementation of practical work in practice.
