Gradually we have more and more profound understanding of the meaning and significance of World Heritage Sites. They are our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. But many of the sites face the severe threat of highly frequent disasters, whose impacts are long-term,widely-felt and even may lead to the complete obliteration of properties.Experience has shown that heritage if well maintained can positively contribute to reducing disaster risks. Therefore, disaster risk assessment and prevention are of great urgency for heritage managers. This paper takes the Dujiangyan Irrigation System (Fig.1),which was seriously damaged by the 5?12 earthquake in 2008,as a study area to analyze the theoretical framework and practical strategies for heritage conservation and management in the geological disaster area.Based on analyzing the worldwide unique value of the Dujiangyan, the paper summarizes the severe destruction in the protected area by geological disasters. The visible damage is that quite a numbers of buildings collapsed or fractured in varying degrees. For instance, the key building complex Er-wang temple was nearly totally ruined (Fig.2).The invisible damage is that the earthquake has a huge impact on the heritage tourism (Table.1),one of the local pillar industries, which has undermined the economic development of Dujiangyan City. The in-situ reconstruction project was completed in 2012,but as the Jiangyou-Guanxian Fracture across the Er-wang temple site and the building complex clings to the mountain (Fig.3),in which the thickness of the fault fracture zone has reached 12-19.6 m after 5?12 earthquake, the security of the complex has been called into question. With the utilization of mechanical model (Fig.4 and 5),the paper analyzes the stability of the mountain slope where Er-wang temple lies. The results show that the slope has a high risk of shallow slip when there is a heavy rainfall. And the rainfall intensity during the 2009 and 2010 storm seasons both exceeded the critical rainfall thresholds for triggering shallow landslides. But encouraging result shows that earthquake has little impact on the stability of the mountain, unless it is larger than 7.5ML.According to Magnitude-Frequency formula the recurrence interval of about 800-1 000 years for an earthquake of 7.5 ML or larger. Also, the difficulties in the process of the reconstruction of the Dujiangyan give important revelation to the heritage managers, such as improving the file database of the heritage site (Fig.6),protecting the traditional skills, arts, etc related to World Heritage.
