The following study focuses on the impacts of microfinance on entrepreneurship in Senegal.Microfinance was introduced into the region as a strategy to alleviate poverty and has provided countless people an access to financial services.Microfinance sector over the last decade has experienced a real growth in relation to the wellbeing of the community and fight against poverty. In 2010 there were more than 1500 recognized financial system, saving and credit mutual funds, loan groups and framework convention. Many development experts have agreed on the fact that microfinance if well organized and harnessed can help empower individuals and enterprises and enable to help develop a country. It can therefore help people improve their lives and work their way out of poverty. However,in the recent past, all this strategy to alleviate poverty has attracted the attention of relevant stakeholders for it has not achieved its expected goals. In the very beginning, the introduction phase of the idea, expectations were high due to the fact that micro loans that are given at affordable interest rates to the poor was sufficient in boosting entrepreneurship and eradicating poverty in west Africa. This leads to the first research question of the study, which is “Has microfinance really help alleviate poverty in West Africa?” The second research question raised is: “who are the main beneficiaries of microfinance in West Africa?” and finally“what recommendations should be given in order to improve the situation?”The issue of microfinance failure in reaching the anticipated growth in Africa is based on the fact that stakeholders expected it would reduce poverty on its own.Unfortunately, studies have shown that the strategy requires the support of appropriate policies and regulatory and legal framework to change African economies “They suffer from structural weaknesses. The support services for them are of uneven quality,if they exist at all.And supervisory and coordinating bodies often have only limited resources”(Hamam & Schwank,2011)1.Microfinance has to be integrated with other social and economic programs to meet the needs of the populations in order to lift them from poverty. There are numerous reasons cited as to why there has been a slow success rate of microfinance in the region. The major reason is the low level of education. This is a major problem as education is very important in the socio-economic scenario and helps develop a country.A large percentage of the targeted people are illiterate which increases their chances of mismanaging the loans offered.Other reasons include: family commitments, irregular income and unaffordable interest rates.A deeper analysis of the situation through questionnaires & interviews using entrepreneurs as the main target of that strategy indicates that there is to some extent a success even if it is marginal. On one hand, there are thousands of people who are appreciative of the fact that they can sustain their families, educate their children, and afford better nutrition and health services for their families as a result of microfinance.Women entrepreneurs on the other hand have had immense benefit from microfinance,as there have been social changes that have allowed them to work.In the process, women have increased their asset base and are in better financial situations. To increase the success of microfinance in West Africa, stakeholders should consider the importance of other core services such as education, consulting and financial advisory services, and increase the amounts of loans offered to the clients.
