This thesis is a study of the teaching situation of English for International Correspondence (EIC) in Chinese universities. It is composed of seven chapters. Chapter One introduces EIC and presents the reason for studying this subject. Chapter Two discusses the differences and relations between EGP and ESP and the essentials of EIC. Chapter Three examines the past and current situation of EIC teaching in China, illustrates the necessity of offering EIC in Chinese universities and analyzes the textbooks of EIC both chronologically and synchronically. Meanwhile, the author makes a research into several teaching approaches ever or presently used to EIC teaching in China. Chapter Four intends to find out the problems with the students studying EIC through analyzing the results of a sample paper test. In order to know the opinion of EIC teachers, students and users on the EIC features, teaching problems and suggestions, the author also designs a questionnaire and chooses 350 students, some teachers and several people working in trade companies to complete the questionnaire. A corresponding analysis of the results of the questionnaire is made to support the authors opinion stated in the following chapters. Chapter Five points out the existing problems with the teaching of EIC in Chinese universities from various aspects including textbooks, teachers, course time and teaching approaches. Chapter Six gives several suggestions to solve the problems mentioned in the former chapter. The last chapter is a conclusion of the thesis. In short, the ultimate aim of this thesis is to find out some problems with EIC teaching in Chinese universities through investigating with a questionnaire, conducting with a sample test and referring to some literatures to give several suggestions to the EIC teachers so as to improve the teaching quality of this course, to help more people have a better understanding of EIC and call the attention of more people to the EIC teaching in China.
