Contemporary British poet Carol Ann Duffy’s poem “The Wife of the World” presents a series of women who were originally silent. They are attached to male historical or mythical celebrities such as Aesop, Leather Marion, Helms, Samson, John the Baptist, Lazarus, Shakespeare, Faust, Elvis Presley, and even Hugo Casemione in “Notre Dame de Paris”. Among them are gentle and unruly; both victims and perpetrators. In poetry, they are not silent, they often have a rich inner world. By telling their stories, they express their thoughts and opinions, subvert their stereotypes about history, gender and gender relations, thus sending out a postmodern feminist voice.
