This article tries to explore the political and cultural conception from Wang Tao’s “Waste Time” in the late Qing Dynasty. Special life experience and times environment as well as diverse and objective cultural thoughts; in addition to Taoism, emphasis on “human ” factors prompted Wang Tao to choose “waste time ” as the entrance to the crusade against traditional culture. In his literary theory, “Shi Wen” is not only the symbol bearing the old culture, but also the entry level of the traditional literati, and also refers to all the knowledge of “not ancient if” and “not western”. From his explanation and crusade on “Shi Wen”, we can see that the advanced intellectuals in the late Qing dynasty, represented by Wang Tao, have constantly revised their understanding of Chinese and Western cultures. Wang Tao’s scream of “Waste Time”, though full of contradictions, still highly demonstrates the revolutionary and advanced nature of the modern Chinese intellectuals in the process of transition.
