Objective To investigate the relationship between angiogenesis and clinical pathology and prognosis of osteosarcoma. Methods Immunohistochemical staining of endothelial cell specific markers FVIII-RAg and CD31 was performed to count the microvessel density of osteosarcoma in 70 cases. Results The tumor microvessel density was not related to osteosarcoma volume, Price’s grade and Dahlin classification, but related to neoplastic osteoid tissue type, WHO new typing and PCNA labeling index. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the prognosis of osteosarcoma with microvessel count <31 (×200) was better, while the prognosis of osteosarcoma with >31 (×200) was poor. Conclusions The results indicate that the microvessel density and survival rate of osteosarcoma are related, suggesting that tumor angiogenesis analysis may be a valuable prognostic indicator of osteosarcoma.
