Methods: Stroke-prone renovascular hypertensive rats and normotensive rats were fed with high-fat diet for 6 weeks and 16 weeks respectively. The changes of endothelium glycocalyx were observed under electron microscope. Results: Cholesterol can cause internal carotid artery and middle cerebral artery in rats. The inner glycocalyx is thin, uneven distribution, often accompanied by missing, caking phenomenon, and the longer the high cholesterol, the more serious the damage. Hypertension can also cause the same changes in the rat middle cerebral artery calyx. This may play an important role in increasing cerebral vascular permeability, promoting lipid deposition and atherosclerosis formation.
