Objective To investigate the expression of midkine (MK) in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma and its relationship with the occurrence of neurotoxicity. Methods Immunohistochemical SP method was used to detect the expression of MK protein in 35 cases of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma and 20 cases of normal salivary gland tissues. The relationship between the expression of MK protein and esophageal nerve invasion was analyzed. Results MK was highly expressed in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma with a positive rate of 82.9% (29/35) and a low expression in normal salivary gland tissues (10.0%, 2/20) The difference was statistically significant (P <0.01). The expression of MK was not related to the age, sex and pathological type of the patients (P> 0.05), but also to the occurrence of the neuropathic invasion (P <0.05). Conclusions MK protein may be involved in the development of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma. The increased expression of MK may be related to the occurrence of neurofacial invasion in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma.
