AD Worsham and colleagues, in the field environments of commercial farmland and experimental fields in North Carolina (USA), conducted a study of crop sowing and no-till found that residues of wheat and rye can kill weeds, Thus mass production of crops. This work is the first of its kind in the same study to suggest that straw can be used to kill grass in Tanaka’s “isolates” (interactions between plants caused by metabolites). Through their research, they found that some of the weed seeds’ bacteria changed the chemical form of the equivalent compounds, which effectively counteract the weeds, a process they call biological.
