Chapter 2 Languages of Japanese Gardens Western or Japanese gardens share a common language in expressing design intent. Garden designers select many plants and decorations to reflect their design intent. Regardless of the objective criteria, they are meticulously arranged. They focus on functions beyond the emphasis on form, color and structure. Before making any decisions, they started by paying attention to collecting data. They examined the pH of the soil, studied the climatic conditions, investigated the drainage system, fully considered the needs of the family, calculated the cost, and forecasted the time required for maintenance. In these respects, the Western and Japanese garden designers are largely the same, but their language and grammar are different. The following lists the language of Japanese gardens, such as stones, streams, plants, and other elements, as well as the revelation of the country-making techniques.
