The Decay of Lying,one of Wilde’s famous critic dialogues,is a demonstration of his aesthetic opinions,such as Art is telling lies,Life imitates art etc,which gives full expression of his pursue of art’s purity and independence.Wilde absolutely takes the side of art and is against the forced interference of art as the subject by politics,utilitarianism,morality and ethics,against the erosion of the artistic realm of beauty by over-realness,against taking the form of art as the accessory to certain content or subject.However,Wilde totally isolates art from reality by putting them in the position of dual antithesis,and this is the root of the internal contradictions in his Aestheticism.This essay aims to discuss the contradictions from four aspects:contradiction between art and real life,art and morality,art and truth and then contradiction between art’s form and content,so as to get a better understanding and correct evaluation of Wilde and his aestheticism.
