Boston: The use of metronidazole and mannitol before colorectal surgery not only eliminates sepsis but also simplifies pre-operative bowel preparation. This conclusion was reached after a study by the Cleveland Hospitals Foundation’s team conducted a double-blind, controlled study of 68 patients scheduled for colorectal surgery. One group received forearm intravenous meclizine and the other received placebo. All patients in both groups were orally given a one liter daily physical cleansing gut preparation, 10% mannitol, and 1 gram x 3 neomycin plus oral mannitol one day prior to surgery.
