Topics of critical critical theory include dystopia and democratic, two-sided technology (ie, both technical and social), the environmental transformation of technological systems, and the contribution of social constructivism to technological philosophy. Critical theory holds that the design of industrial society is politically occasional, in opposition to technological determinism and economic determinism. Human beings, nowadays dependent on technical laws and requirements, may be able to control technology and determine the evolution of technology in the future. Critical theory refers to the process of establishing such a society as “democratic rationalization,” 3 and the technological advances it requires are premised on broad public participation in technological decision-making. The fundamental shift between this “cost” and “return” is unpredictable.
