British immigrant writer Karil Phillips constantly writes about nourishing his own multiple regions in return for the rich legacy of his multicultural identity. In contrast to his own immigration experience, Phillipps keenly captured the never-ending phenomenon of “crossing the river,” so he presented his image of “crossing the river” from the ancient times to the present. The “crossing” in Phillips ’works has the geographical and temporal spatial movement as well as the metaphorical meaning of straddling racial boundaries and Phillips’ leapfrogging skills in adapting to the theme of “crossing the river.” The complexity of crossing the river just reflects the common dilemma facing mankind.
