Osamu Mikami and scholars at Tokai University’s engineering department have developed an optical switch made of a fiber grating that transmits or reflects light of a specific wavelength. They consider the device to be used as a transmission mechanism in multiwavelength optical fiber transmission devices that dynamically control the optical signal path at visible signal wavelengths. Fiber gratings are formed by reducing the periodic variation of the refractive index of the core portion of the fiber. Periodic refraction
