第一屆全國人民代表大會第一次會議開會期間,我訪問了出席大會的華僑代表謝應瑞先生。謝先生是廣東省梅縣人,二十一年前,他遠離祖國,僑居到印度。在那裏一直從事華僑教育工作。曾當過小學教員、校長,中學教員,現在是印度加爾各答市華僑舉辦的興華中學的教務主任。 謝應瑞代表對我說:我感到今天作一個中國公民是光榮的。祖國的強盛帶給我們無限的幸福。可是,過去的痛苦我是永遠忘不了的。解放前,華僑在國外受人卑視,處處擡不起頭來。生命財産都得不到保障,更不要談正常權利和利益了。因此,有些華僑甚至不願說自己是中國人,連中國話也不屑講了。一九四九年十月一日這個偉大的日子,中華人民共和國成立了。毛主席莊
