Pratt & Whitney has tested a full-size, scramjet system at the National Space Shuttle (NASP) under M6 conditions. Specific parts of the test is the engine combustion chamber and the internal nozzle. The data collected from the five experiments that have taken place are consistent with the scramjet operating characteristics previously obtained by computational fluid dynamics analysis. These data confirm that this propulsion system will meet the NASP program requirements. At least three more M6 tests are scheduled to pave the way for testing the system’s scramjet mode of operation that transitions from ramjet operation to above M6. The company said they will also conduct tests up to M8 to evaluate the performance of the entire system and its various components.
