In this paper, the characteristics of shear wave movement along the north side of the northeast of Hatteras Bay are analyzed by satellite infrared data. The observed average wavelength of fluctuation is 75km, the average amplitude (crest to trough) is 17km, and the average period is 27h. Observations show that shear waves propagate eastward at an average velocity of 100 cm / s. The duration of a shear wave event is one week. The statistical analysis of the frequency of shear wave from 1977 to 1982 shows that the occurrence frequency is closely related to the instability of the Gulf Stream. In this paper, the relationship between the rise and fall of a shear wave event occurred in the spring of 1982 and the wind stress data measured synchronously by the NOAA buoy are analyzed. Based on this, we propose that the atmospheric action is the mechanism of the shear wave excitation.
