“琉璃”也就是一般俗称的玻璃,成为一种艺术精品在中国古早的工艺史上已留有纪录,但在近代以来的中国工艺历史上近乎缺席,反而让法国、意大利等欧洲周家,技冠全球,忙于内乱外战的中国子民,也几乎忘了这项曾经在汉代创下辉煌技艺的琉璃工艺。在上世纪80年代初期,张毅与杨惠珊,新锐电影导演与亚太影后,是台湾电影的代名词,却在1987年同时收起导演的权威,褪下明星的光芒,在不被众人看好的状况下成立了琉璃工房,认真地玩起玻璃。
