【Abstract】Many men have accumulated enormous wealth than they can ever use have shown an extreme hunger for more; in the mean time, many men who have been a certain high level of rights are eager to be the one. Even worse, this kind of starvation has reflected on teenagers. This thesis focuses on three questions: what if our teenagers lose themselves in this age of extravagance and waste; what if the human imagination is misused for the destruction rather than construction; what if the original desire of rights covers the potential of human charity.
【Key words】the destructors; teenagers; cyber crime
The story, “The Destructors”, vividly revealed the human evil nature, especially hidden in teenagers. Graham Greene used many details to describe how this thing went on. Old Misery showed his beautiful house to T., and after visiting the beautiful house with a staircase two hundred years old like a corkscrew, T. got a “better” idea, better than the idea that the gang was to disperse in pairs, take buses at random and see how many free rides could be snatched from unwary conductors. “We will pull it down. We will destroy it.” When he said this, his eyes was “as grey and disturbed as the drab August day” and he was “without the smallest flicker of glee”. “Grab” means not only the day in August is dull, but also the life of these teenagers. They decided to destroy a beauty just for fun. And since the rest all agreed with this idea and elected T. the new leader, so it is wrong to say T. was the only chief culprit, but all the crazy members of the gang.
This essay was written in 1954, when European literary circles were still in the midst of profound reflection on the Second World War and human nature. In the form of allegory, symbolism, the author focused on human nature, and the evil side of human nature can be especially profound introspection. Perhaps the purpose of this article was to alert the middle of 20th century Western civilization. But in my opinion, this article is a warning not only for adults, but also really for young people.
From this sentence: When teenagers step into adolescence, their physical growth is approaching maturity, because of this, they tend to become self-realization and have strong desire to show off themselves. But their need usually cannot be satisfied in real life. Some teenagers focus on making troubles or committing crimes to challenge the authority just because they want to raise others concern. The article also proved it. “The fame of the Wormsley Common car-park gang would surely reach around London. There would be headlines in the papers.” The former leader, Blackie, thought of going home, of never returning, of letting the gang all discover the hollowness of T. leadership, but when he supposed after all what T. proposed was possible—nothing like it had ever been done before, and driven by the pure, simple and altruistic ambition of fame for the gang, he just went back to the shadow. Adolescents or young adults tend to make mistakes sometimes because they are lack of enough experiences and abilities to distinguish right or wrong. So sometimes people that surrounded them can be little less than a Parada’ s box, capable of unleashing the lure to commit crime upon those strongly curious teenagers. Frankly speaking, the young who break the law and commit crimes are both vermin and victims.
Born in an era that everyone is suspicious of each other, teenagers have learnt to conjecture the world with the most malicious attitude. When Mr. Thomas stopped the gang and wanted to give them some chocolates, the gang’s response was quite strange.“It’s a bribe.” Their spirit world has been warped. Maybe Mr. Thomas did this just out of kindness. But since teenagers were influenced by the black world, they sacrificed the whole morning to the game of bouncing that only Mike was young enough to enjoy.
If you use the most malice to suspect other people, you will never receive any kindness from the world. There is so much fear, so much mistrust.
We all are very familiar with the line that goes, “the youth are the hope and the future of our country”. And now is the most crucial moment to establish, strengthen and develop their world outlook including their learning psychology. So pay more attention to teenagers’ growth, both physically and emotionally. Only do we entreat the word with love, the world will really entreat us well.
