The relative biological effect of neutrons (RBE) changes with changes in neutron energy and dose. The effect of 0.43 MeV neutrons is greatest. The shape of the neutron dose-response curve is different from that of the gamma ray, and therefore the RBE value is highest in the low dose region. According to reports from plant and animal cells, RBE values can be as high as 100. Higher RBE values appear in the radiation dose area of interest, necessitating more experimental data and careful estimation of damage below 10 cGy in order to reduce the need for extrapolation from higher doses.
