1896年3月,清政府首次派遣学生13人东渡扶桑,拉开了晚清、民国中国人留学日本热潮的序幕。稍后,反映留日学生生活的小说也相继问世。最初是零星片断的,如佚名《破裂不全的小说》及梦芸生《伤心人语》中的部分章节。第一部完整的并专门描写留日学生及游历官员生活的小说应是履冰的《东京梦》,其后向恺然的《留东外史》继承并发扬了《东京梦》谴责小说的传统及故事情节,成为反映民国初年在日华人众生相的集大成者。
