从全减速顶驼峰的峰顶开始,溜放车辆的走行过程是通过加速区、等速区(道岔区)、减速区和车场内的连挂区到达停车区。其中,减速区的特点是有密集设置减速顶,称为减速顶群,人们常把这一段设置减速顶群的线路称为顶群段。在顶群段的运营实践中,曾经出现过轻车和空车速度过低甚至途停的现象,也出现过重车超速途挂的现象,甚至出现过车辆脱线事故。因此,进一步探讨顶群段的设计是很必要的。
