毛主席說:‘指導我們思想的理論基礎是馬克思列宁主義’,這是我們檢查自己思想和批判敌人思想的唯一檩準。 馬克思列寧主义历史科學的理論基礎和方法论基礎,是把辯證唯物主義原理運用到社會生活研究上的历史唯物主義(‘历史’,蘇聯大百科全書選譯,人民出版社版一頁),這是我們檢查自己和批判敵人历史观和方法论的唯一標準。列寧在‘唯物论與经驗批判論’中,引了一句古代名谚‘要想認識敵人,就必须進入敵人底巢穴’(人民出版社中文版,三四八頁),因此,為了批判敌人的謬说,就不得不引述一些敵人自己的文字。這里批判胡適的謬論,也以胡適自己的話為主。胡適的思想,在他本人來說,前後是有發展的,但就它的整个体系来說,其反動的、唯心的、为買辦資產階級服務的本質是始終一贯的。因此,我們注意它的時代先後,而不詳細區別它的時代先後。在胡適的論著里,時常可以看到他的所谓‘唯物的’、‘科学的’論證,但是他這些術語的涵义與人們所理解的有所不同。這种術語涵义的不同,不是恩格斯所論的術語的革命(恩格斯:资本论英譯本第一卷編者序,‘资本論’第一卷,郭大力王亚南中譯本,人民出版社一九五三年版,二七頁),而是有意的歪曲或是無知的錯誤。我们不能在他的故弄玄虚的魔术式的詞句前面麻痹,而認為胡適也有他的‘唯物的’、‘科學的’一面。
