According to a recent report by Research and Technology Management magazine, the government of south Korea is implementing an ambitious plan for science and technology development, trying to keep its economic and technological development level catching up with Japan and major western countries by the year 2000. The “highly advanced dilemma project” or “G-7 plan” is scheduled to invest a total of 6 billion U.S. dollars over the next 10 years. This is an unprecedented huge investment in science and technology development in south Korea. It will be implemented by the Ministry of Science and Technology in South Korea and will be joined by other ministries involved in science. Its main goal is to develop seven near-market technologies, namely semiconductor memory chips, ISDN, HDTV, smart computers, electric motors, new antibiotics and pesticides, and fully automated manufacturing systems. There are also seven more fundamental fields of research: biotechnology, “environmentally friendly” technologies, clean energy, advanced nuclear reactors, next generation
