吴湖帆山水自四王、玄宰(董其昌,字玄宰)入手,上窥董(董源)、巨(巨然)等宋元大家。后期摆脱流派束缚,对“南北宗”之“青绿”“水墨”等兼收并蓄,形成了自身独特风格。其《北山荷锄图》扇画,近学玄宰,远追仲圭,强调笔墨趣味,聊写胸中逸气,追求简率疏淡、清逸幽雅之境界,表达得心源、重意象、求情趣、尚闲逸的审美追求,于自身丰腴灵秀、清新缜丽的主流画风以外,回溯南宗而别具面目。
