From July 29th to 30th, 1985, the APAC (Asian Institute of Planning and Architecture) held a seminar in Tokyo entitled “Identification of Architecture in Cultural Connections”. After the first Asian Architects Conference held in Manila in the autumn of 1984, there was another conference on Asian architecture. Participated in the meeting were some members of APAC and some invited representatives. They were experts in planning and construction from Japan, China, ASEAN countries, Hong Kong regions of China, and India from the Western Pacific Region. The theme of the conference is about the identifiability of Asian cities and buildings. The conference believes that Asia is facing the challenges of modern Western architecture and postmodern architecture. How to further develop Asian traditional culture and further improve the recognizability of Asian architecture has become a pressing issue at present. Asian buildings can only have their way out if they actively accept the challenges from the West and effectively develop Asia’s cultural advantages, so as to come up with a creative answer. The conference published a total of more than a dozen papers of the delegates and conducted constructive discussions. Delegates expressed special attention to the following topics such as the sociality of architecture, the relationship between architecture and culture, the urbanization of Asia, the role of architects, and local architecture, and made the necessity of holding the next conference. Fully affirmed. According to the contents of the discussion, the meeting also drafted and adopted a declaration that the delegates considered to be “draft declaration”. This declaration not only prepared for the “formal declaration” of the next session, but also summarized the thoughts and opinions of the meeting. Undoubtedly, these insights will certainly promote and guide the development of Asian cities and buildings.
