To investigate the functional state of potassium channel in airway smooth muscle inbronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) and review the significance of potassium channel activators in treat-ment of asthma. Methods: Randomised, single blind, placebo controlled, crossover method was used tomeasure airway reactivity to methycholine(Mch) in 12 asthmatics and 10 healthy people. Results: The ex-periment showed that the initial airway resistance(Rrs) and sensitivity (expressed as a minimum amountof cumulative o8se, Dmin)to Mch were significantly higher in asthmatics than that in healthy people (0. 72±0. 05) vs (0. 41±0. 01)kPa. L-1. s-1 in Rrs (P<0. 01), and (0. 34±0. 12) vs (1. 92±0. 03)mg in Dmin(P < 0. 01 ), respectively. lnhaling single dose of Lemakalim (37. 5 pg) reduced Rrs and increased Dminmarkedly in asthmatics (0. 72 ±0. 05) vs(0. 55±0.02)kPa. L-1. s-1 (P<0. 05) l and (0. 34±0 . 12) vs(3. 16 ± 0. 81 )mg (P<0. 01 ),respectively. Copnclusion: (1 ) There may be blockade in potassium channel inairway smooth muscle in asthmatics, which plays a role in BHR in some extent; (2) p0tassium channel ac-tivators, such as Lemakalim, might be useful in prophylaxis and treatment of asthma.
