What literature means to classroom teaching, means to education, and to children’s growth, as a research staff, who spend much time on dealing with teachers and students; I would like to share my opinions on the example of an animal fiction Shepherd Dog Trilogy.
Shepherd Dog Trilogy is written by Mu Ling based on her own experiences, including three works—Brothers, Fight Alone, and Born of Fire. The trilogy told a very wonderful story: Gray and Black Head are brothers, but are fed separately by people. Later, Gray flees to mountains and becomes a dominated “ya ao”; Black leads a vagabond life in the city, and finally manages to return to the pasture after many setbacks. He goes into the mountain to look for Gray, fights with wolves, and saves Gray and his young master at the very moment of live-or-die.
Simply from the introduction, we have a sense that this is a wonderful and extraordinary story, which brings us different feelings and discoveries. The story is different from campus literature that students often read. We often feel that students cannot read continually, which is actually like eating. Always tasting one flavor will certainly bore people, so does reading. It cannot always be campus literature; there should be some other novels to read, like animal fiction. Children and animals have a natural connection, and animal fictions can move children to the heart the most. We can say, animal literature reading is the first step to introduce children into the palace of reading.
As for each book specifically, there still have a lot of plots to constantly surprise and shock readers. For example, in Brothers, old cat Bajin steals Gray to get back at Heiyun for killing his son. Bajin wants to kill the son and then cannot help but adopting him instead. In Fight Alone, Black Head escapes successfully with White Ugly, however, they are stopped by bad willed people. They experience poison war, anesthetic war, and water battle, which are more wonderful than each one. In Born of Fire, gray and female wolf are sworn enemies, but somehow, Gray constantly sends food to the female wolf either on purpose or unconsciously. In these three books, there are a lot of stories that are unheard, and these wonderful stories are huge attraction to keep students reading.
In addition to let students enjoy a wonderful story and keep reading it, Shepherd Dog Trilogy allows students to learn some writing skills. Take psychological description for example, the trilogy are characteristic in terms of psychological description. Like Born of Fire, Baiwa are killed by a black dog. After the funeral: Herdsmen disperse, so do shepherd dogs.
Black Head still lies down by the grave, and nobody is able to persuade him to walk away.
Countless crow hovering in the grave, gather together into a mass of black cloud. In Black Head’s misty eyes, the black cloud keeps transforming and it transforms into the otter king, the black dog, and ferociously faces that he and Baiwa used to fight together with.
When the sun goes down, he feels cold.
Loosing his Damon and Pythias, Black Head grieves deeply, but the novel does not say how he grieves directly, instead, it uses scenery descriptions: the crow hovering and the sun going down. Choosing these desolate scenes, the novel indirectly expresses Black Head’s grief, and through the visual and touch, expressed his grief of losing friends indirectly.
There are many more exquisite and accurate psychological descriptions like these in the novel.
Scene descriptions are also very worthy for students to use for reference and learn from. Shepherd Dog Trilogy has vivid scene descriptions, and brings people to the moment. For example, in Fight Alone, Black Head and White Ugly flee together. How two circus owners catch them, and how they diverse and escape cleverly, make readers feel overwhelmed.
In addition to help students write, Shepherd Dog Trilogy also can produce a profound impact to children in the cultivation of good qualities. The children will have a role identity when reading stories. If stories attract children, characteristics of the role will leave deep impression on children, and have a significant impact on them. Black Head has a strong sense of responsibility and self-esteem, and he sees protection of the weak as his responsibility. He has courage and wisdom of fighting with powerful enemies, perseverance of walking miles to return home, and consolidation of principles. After Gray returns to his nature, he arises spontaneously compassion on natural enemies’ cubs; No matter how bad human treat him, he stick with the principle of not hurting people.
Pride, self-reliance and self-improvement, strength, courage, wisdom, perseverance, responsibility, compassion, and the spirit of firmly standing by, which all are qualities what we want our children to have, however, cultivation of these qualities will not complete just by preaching. It needs subtle and entrenched influence, as well as the help of something to let children really be aware of the importance of these qualities, thus seeds of these qualities can be planted into children’s mind. This thing is literary works. Shepherd Dog Trilogy is the work to deeply shock and move children. Children are attracted to the great story, and experience an adventure with Gray and Black Head, as well as experience the quality of roles that they love. This is the best way to foster excellent qualities.
It is not just Shepherd Dog Trilogy, which can play such a large role in classroom teaching, education and children’s growth, but all excellent animal novels have such qualities.
For children’s reading and writing skills, and the cultivation of excellent qualities, we have tried everything, however, simply ignore animal novels, which can move them, attract them, and have a natural connection with them. When those vivid images with unique charms present themselves to children, they will be deeply moved, shocked, and thus generate a deep resonance by the vitality, masculine grandeur of the life, and unrestrained life style of those animal friends.
Therefore, I want to say: please use animal fictions to build a child’s growth space.
