丹江口水利枢纽位于长江流域汉江干流上、中游交界处,在丹江与汉江汇口处的下游。枢纽以上集水面积95200平方公里,河长890公里,枢纽以下丹江口～皇庄区间(简称丹～皇区间)集水面积46800平方公里,河长270公里,皇庄以下汉江下游河长382公里,两岸有干堤约720公里。堤内还有民垸十多处,有效蓄水量近36亿立米。丹江口水利枢纽于1958年冬开工,1959年冬截流,1969年开始蓄水发电,1973年建成初期工程。目前最高蓄水位为157米,是一个年调节水库,它是以防洪为主的综合利用
