美国对M240(其制造厂— FN公司称它为MAG—58)的兴趣可能始于1973年斋 目战争后。
In the summer of 1993, as a result of contracting for the purchase of a fleet of M240 7.62mm machine guns, the United States Marine Corps actually eliminated the U.S. M60 machine gun by using such a machine gun designed by Belgium as its standard weapon for all its troops, armor and infantry. The United States' interest in the M240 (its manufacturer, FN, which calls it MAG-58) may start after the 1973 Zaram war. According to some reports, the M129 7.62mm coaxial machine gun on the U.S.-made M60A1 tank used by Israel is so unreliable that many of the M60A1 were destroyed by the man-friendly anti-tank weapons. Two years later, Americans were involved in a century-old contract that led them to sell F-16 fighters to Belgium, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands. The Pentagon has done its utmost to advise partners on the other side of the Atlantic to seriously consider arms cooperation while at the same time they seek to purchase military equipment from Europe.
