Unlike the green revolution in food supply, the livestock revolution is triggered by consumer demand. The population growth, the accelerating process of urbanization in developing countries and the growth of income have greatly promoted the demand for foods derived from animal meat. From the early 1970s to the mid-1990s, the growth of meat consumption in developing countries was ten times that of developed countries. In the latter half of this period, meat consumption in developing countries grew even more rapidly, among which Asian regions recorded the fastest growth.
