1982年春天,在一次压制贝母腊叶标本的时候,偶然发现放置3~4天贝母活植株的鲜鳞茎显著增大。经过多次反复验证,得出鳞茎比原重增加2倍以上的结论。又经过移栽试验,发现移栽苗的茎叶能继续生长和进行光合作用积累养分,地下鳞茎增重3倍左右。野生贝母产区开展贝母人工栽培生产,都是在野生贝母开花后采挖鲜鳞茎来栽种(贝母开花前老鳞茎消失新鲜茎尚未形成);
