邓廷桢(1776—1846),江苏江宁(今南京)人,鸦片战争时期著名的爱国大臣。他曾任两广总督,与钦差大臣林则徐一起同心协力在广东禁烟抗英;后来他调任闽浙总督,领导了厦门保卫战,取得了抗击英军舰队的胜利。但是,英国侵略者利用清政府的腐败软弱,攻占了浙江定海,威逼天津。1840年10月,邓廷桢被道光皇帝撤职,到广州听候差遣。他到广州后不久就听说英国要求割占香港与厦门等地。他对这两地都十分熟悉,深知它们的重要地
Deng Tingzhen (1776-1846), Jiangsu Jiangning (now Nanjing), the famous patriotic minister during the Opium War. He served as Governor of both Guangdong and Guangxi, working together with Lin Zexu, imperial envoy, to ban smoking and resisting the British in Guangdong. Later he was transferred to governor of Fujian and Zhejiang Province, led Xiamen defensive war, and won the victory against the British fleet. However, the British invaders, taking advantage of the Qing government’s weak corruption, captured Zhejiang Dinghai and intimidated Tianjin. In October 1840, Deng Tingzhen was dismissed by Daoguang emperor to Guangzhou for sending. Shortly after he arrived in Guangzhou, he heard that Britain demanded the seizure of Hong Kong and Xiamen. He is very familiar with both places and understands their importance
