功能高分子材料的概念大致出现于上世纪60年代。早在上世纪30年代,属于功能高分子的离子交换树脂和感光树脂就逐步得到了应用,但功能高分子作为独立的一类材料受到科学界、产业部门和政府的高度重视是最近20多年的事。一般说来,利用其力学性能的高分子,称为一般高分子,如聚乙烯、聚苯乙烯、聚氯乙烯等;而利用力学性能以外性能的高分子,叫做功能高分子(Functional Polymer)。功能高分子多数带有官能团,化学结构较复杂。其化合物一般具有长链结构,每个分子都好像一条长长的线,许多分子纠集在一起,就成了一个扯不开的线团,这也就是高分子化合物具有较高强度,可以作为结构材料使用
