The lck gene product is relatively specifically present in mature telogen T cells and is a 509 amino acid polypeptide chain with tyrosine kinase activity. The amino terminus of this peptide chain is linked to the intracytoplasmic sections of the CD4 and CD8 molecules, and modulates the conduction process of the T cell activation signal by promoting the phosphorylation of tyrosine residues on the substrate molecule.
