This article closely examines Strauss’s concept of “Medieval Enlightenment,” focusing on the role played by Arab philosophy in the development of Strauss’s thought. The article also emphasizes Strauss’s concerns about the analysis of Arab philosophy and the tension generated by these analyzes. The author believes that Strauss involved in the controversy between the ancients and the modern is to show that medieval philosophy can not simply be classified as reconcile philosophy and religion efforts. The ideas of some Arab philosophers emerge through the development of Strauss’s philosophy and determine his interpretation of Maimonides and Plato and his anti-modernist position. However, Strauss’s “Medieval Enlightenment” concept is still fundamentally vague. Does this enlightenment advocate the preservation of faith and reason, or does it express an atheistic or counterfeit materialism?
