The most influential political commentator of the United States, Walt Whitman, started this very influential “study of public opinion” with a story that people in several countries, for some reason, live on islands that have never before been visited by humans. A few months will have a boat for them to bring some daily necessities and the latest newspaper. When the ships arrived again, what they learned from the latest newspaper was that their respective countries had declared their war a few months ago as enemies, and that they remained in the post-war period according to the previous Peace of information.
