迄马其顿亚历山大征服之前,上古西亚居民大抵可分为三类:一类是在西亚文明的曙光上移居而来的古老居民,如苏美尔人、埃兰人等,他们所操语言既非塞姆语也非印欧语,但率先在西亚创立最古文明的正是这一类居民。另一类是在西亚文明早期,由南部阿拉伯沙漠地区朝北陆续迁徙的塞姆人,如阿卡德人、亚述人等。再一类是从东部和西北部迁徙而来的印欧人,如赫梯人、波斯人等。
