Oncorhynchus mykiss, less than one year old, was divided into two groups according to the coding label: a group fed a three-week feeding cycle with starvation for three weeks; and the other group fed with feeding on a daily basis. The experimental period of 24 weeks, weekly recording of its growth, body composition and plasma levels of growth hormone. There was no significant difference in standard body length and body weight of rainbow trout between the two groups. For reared fish, specific growth rates and fullness reached their maximum during the last week of feeding. Compared with the control group, the water content and protein content of reared fed fish significantly increased, while the fat level was lower. The absolute weight loss and fat loss during the starvation phase decreased gradually with the cycle, indicating that this is an adaptation of adult fish to adverse effects. The concentration of plasma growth hormone is not affected by circulating feeding, suggesting that plasma growth hormone levels are not responsible for the compensatory growth of rainbow trout.
