It is a feature of the present invention that protective gas is continuously supplied to the inlet and outlet regions of the slab at a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure during the continuous casting process to prevent the molten steel from contacting the air. This is accomplished by providing a separation zone at the separator ring and at the crystallizer inlet that includes a first separation space of greater diameter than the separation ring and crystallizer. The pressure in the first compartment must always be below atmospheric pressure and the second compartment to be filled with protective gas and to ensure that the pressure is above atmospheric pressure.
