The Great Handil field consists of over 500 hydrocarbon accumulation blocks in the form of superimposed and spaced river deltaic sandstones. Most of the conglomerates consist of a large saturated oil column located beneath the gas cap, trapped in a well-over-lithologic overburden, and mined using either natural or strong natural water flooding. In 1995, further five oil reservoirs representing nearly one-fifth of the total OOIP of oilfields and close to the end of the flood development (58% of the total underground total reserves of the existing crude oil were mined) Note Dry gas exploitation increases ultimate oil recovery. Today, after three years of dry gas injection, the recovery of these five reservoirs has increased by 1.2% of the existing underground crude oil reserves. Note Dry gas projects have both been technically and economically successful. The application of field data card marked the main driving mechanism of dry gas. The previous decline in oil production has ceased and oil production is stabilizing. The main monitoring challenge is to control the gas injection in most production wells, especially the gas injection during high injection rates, in order to compensate for the shortcomings of low gas entry due to gas utilization. Close monitoring of wells, reservoir dynamics, conducting numerical simulations and material balance studies will help to better understand application mechanisms, modify and develop more effective policies to maximize oil yield. The experience gained and analysis of this three-year project have given us the confidence to apply dry gas promotion to the development of other reservoirs in the Handil field.
