The relationship between selenium(Se)and dilated cardiomyo-pathy is studied in this paper.Blood Se content and hair Se contentwere measured in normal subjects,and patients with dilated cardio-myopathy and other heart diseases from 1983 to 1985.Blood Se contentaveraged 0.086±0.028μg/ml in normal subjects,0.089±0.081μg/min other heart diseases and 0.039±0.012μg/ml in dilated Cardiomyo-pathy.Hair Se content averaged 0.64±0.016 ppm in normalsubjects,0.63±0.52ppm in other heart diseases,and 0.28±0.025ppm in dilated cardiomyopathy.These results show that Se contentof patients with dilated cardiomyopathy markedly decreased bothin blood and hair.Se deficiency might be one of the etiologicalfactors for dilated cardiomyopathy and may also be one of thecriteria for the diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy.
