壶是以陶瓷、金属、紫砂或其他材质制成的一种有把有嘴的器皿,通常用来盛茶、酒、水等液体。最初的壶一般都用于盛酒、装水,如流行于商周时期的青铜酒壶,再如唐宋时期用于盛水的汤瓶等等。到了明洪武二十四年(1391年),明太祖朱元璋下诏废贡团茶,改贡叶茶(散茶),碾末而饮的唐煮宋点饮法,变成了以沸水冲泡叶茶的散茶清饮法,品饮艺术发生了划时代的变化,茶壶开始盛行。故明代开始有了真正意义上用于泡茶的茶壶。
