Chapter 8 Inhomogeneous Magnetic Field Instruments The single-focus and dual-focus static mass spectrometers described above all use a uniform magnetic field. Generally only radial focusing is considered. The design theory of these instruments is more perfect, the magnet structure is relatively simple, the performance can often meet the experimental requirements, the current wider application. However, even if the pole pieces are machined to be very flat and perfectly symmetrical, only the central part will have a uniform magnetic field while the edge parts will appear as a diffuse magnetic field with a non-uniform magnetic field (Figure 8-1). Diffusive magnetic fields have both radial and axial components and, if handled properly, can act as radial and axial
