This article is selected from the 28th Symposium of the Sagamore Army Materials Research Conference. This session was held in Lake Placid, United States, in July 1981 and featured the theme “Relaxation of Residual Stress and Stress.” The author Helmut Wohlfahrt of the Federal Republic of Germany analyzed a large number of recent experimental facts comprehensively and theoretically clarified two different possible processes for the formation of residual stress during shot peening, The effect of the pellet conditions and parameters on the process and hence the residual stress distribution. His argument and conclusion for the shot peening technology research staff is of reference value.
