In the treatment of asymptomatic mild hypertension, the main consideration should be to choose a drug that does not increase the symptoms. Diuretics and beta-blockers are still the preferred first-line drugs, but their clinical status is being challenged by newer drugs. Diuretics Low-dose thiazides (eg, 2.5 mg of bendroflumethiazide or 0.5 mg of cyclopentothiazine per morning) are inexpensive and are easy to use for the majority of patients with few symptomatic side effects. It has been determined that diuretics in older patients are more effective than younger patients. Drugs should be chosen on a patient-by-patient basis and not on the basis of the mechanism of hypertension (which may involve renin types). For patients with concomitant hypertension and congestive heart failure, diuretics can treat both diseases at the same time
