This paper examines the welfare effects of Resale Price Maintenance in a heterogeneous retailer. We consider that a manufacturer sells its products in two communities through competing retailers. Retailers in one community have the same marginal cost of sales, but retailers in different communities have different marginal costs. By controlling the retail price, manufacturers can directly set the optimal price, allowing retailers to get more revenue from consumers. Maintaining retail prices encourages higher-cost retailers to provide more sales, resulting in higher total cost of sales. Therefore, reducing the degree of competition within the brand may not only harm the interests of consumers, but also not conducive to the overall interests of society.
