小王桂卿的老师为数不少,小桂松、黄宝岩、田子文、刘廷贵、蒋鑫堂、郑法祥……而最为著名的一位,便是周信芳。和这位老师的缘分,可以上溯到祖辈——1914年、1915年周信芳来上海演出时,“坐钟”(舞台负责人的别称,因要掐准演出时间而得名)者便是小王桂卿的祖父,据说祖父还专门为周信芳传授了舞台管理知识。周信芳后来能在“丹桂第一台”当后台经理,与此不无关系。这算是两家结缘的开始。待到了小王桂卿兄弟这一代,周信芳经常对他们的父亲强调,要让孩子们学习文化。他说:“将来的演员,不能是大老粗,得学知识。先要通读剧本,还要学字、解词、明白历史。”当时有一些班主说:别让孩子识字,一识字就变坏了,不好带了;还有的老先生认为口传心授记得牢,用笔忘得快。
